Perched along the edge of a Mississippi River bluff, the Riverview Deck was designed as a seamless extension of both home and landscape—balancing structural precision with the natural beauty of its surroundings.

This project required a highly intentional approach from the very beginning. The existing deck sat at the bluff’s edge, presenting challenges that demanded both expertise and restraint. Working alongside Shelter Architects and Mickman Brothers Landscaping, the team developed a coordinated plan to protect the bluff, navigate existing root systems, and preserve neighboring sightlines—ensuring the final result felt integrated, not imposed.

To minimize disruption to the terrain, the structure is supported by 14 helical piers, allowing for precise installation while maintaining the integrity of the bluff. A full steel frame system was selected to deliver long-term durability and design flexibility. This approach allowed for extended spans, fewer footings, and a low-profile build that sits naturally within the grade.

Every detail was considered with the future in mind. The layout was strategically designed to accommodate a planned home addition, with select sections engineered for seamless removal, ensuring the space evolves alongside the home.

Material selections reinforce the elevated design. Azek’s Autumn Chestnut decking, installed with hidden fasteners, creates a warm, uninterrupted surface that complements the surrounding landscape while maintaining a clean, modern finish.

Below, a series of custom gabion retaining walls anchor the bluff, providing essential erosion control while introducing layered spaces for gathering, seating, and entertaining. The integration of structure and landscape transforms the outdoor environment into a cohesive experience.

Constructed in carefully phased timelines, the project ensured the homeowners maintained a functional outdoor space throughout the process.
